DOCS+ COPA 71

★★★★★ “A documentary poised to change how the history of women’s sport is remembered.” – The Guardian

COPA 71 is the extraordinary story of the 1971 Women’s Soccer World Cup, a tournament witnessed by record crowds but which has been written out of sporting history – until now.

Although the tournament was hugely popular at the time, it was not supported – indeed it was decried – by the football establishment and the first “official” tournament was not held until nearly twenty years later.

This film, executive produced by Serena and Venus Williams, tells the story of a tournament on a global scale, viewed by record audiences, fizzing with the promise of a new future for women’s sport – and yet apparently deleted from history?

GUEST SPEAKER Introducing the film this month is Dr. Tom McClelland, of Clare College Cambridge.
